Internet Experiment "User" Section:

To begin, click on the Start button (lower left corner). Move the mouse to the E123 folder (at the top on the menu). On the next menu that appears, click on "Internet Explorer" to begin.

If you are having problems and need to speak with the TA, you can call the Centennial Lab at 5-8715. Remember, the Fax experiment may tie up the phone lines, so it may take a few tries to get through.

If you are unable to access the network through Internet Explorer (the NCSU home page fails to appear after several minutes), go to "E123 Assembler Assignment" in the E123 folder and begin the Assembler exercises (which do not make use of the network).

User Exercises--

1. Where did your professors go to college? When did they graduate? What topics are they conducting research on? Use the NCSU website to find out. Each group member should look for at least one of their professors (Hint: First find the web page for the department that they are associated with, then look for individual professors). Download the web pages giving the information into your group's directory.

2. The web address for James Madison University is http://www.jmu.edu. Locate the kinesiology department at James Madison University and find the course requirements for undergraduate kinesiology majors. Download the web page containing this information into your group's directory.

3. Try to locate Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Hint: The NCSU home page provides access to listings of other colleges and universities through the "Directories" heading). Record the web address for Rensselaer:

_____________________________________________________

See if they offer majors in your fields of study. What are the course requirements? Download the pages listing the required courses into your group's directory.

4. Using the available search engines (accessible through the "Search" button on the menu bar), try to locate the Symantic corporation. Record their web address:

_____________________________________________________

What business is this company involved in? What the names of some of their products?

_____________________________________________________

5. Go back to Symantec's home page (if you are hopelessly lost at this point, you can access get to Symantec's home page by clicking on the "Favorites" button and selecting "Symantec Corporation"). One of the ways that companies use web pages is to advertise and sell their products. Click on the "Purchase" button at the top of the page. A message will appear stating that a "secure connection" will be used. Click on the "About Security..." button on this message and read the excerpt on Internet security. Select a product to order and look at the information that you are required to enter to place an order (do not actually enter information or submit any orders, please). Why is a secure connection used in this portion of the web page?

6. Another way that companies make use of the Internet is posting software for public use. This is particularly useful when dealing with computer programs that require frequent updates. Go to the following site:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus/

This site contains update files for one of Symantec's programs, which can be downloaded by just clicking on their names. Note that some of the files have dates (month and year) included in the file names; new updates are released monthly. Why does it make sense for the company to provide updates in this way?

7. Search the web (using the search engines of your choice) for information on a subject that is of interest to you. Record the names and web addresses of any interesting sites that you find (you will need this information for your assembler exercises).
