The initial offerings of this new Product and Process Engineering Laboratory showed that the Engineering 1-2-3 concept works. The students learned the definition and dimensions of engineering through "hands-on" roles. Their problem-solving and creative thinking skills were improved through collaborative learning. The lab was an effective tool for early student responsibility and involvement, leading to improved student confidence and competence and the (re)discovery of the pleasures of learning on their own and with others. Some faculty may ask, "Isn't this lab just teaching vocational trades to our engineering students?" The answer is simple: experiencing firsthand what works and why is a powerful introduction to understanding product and process function, the design process, and manufacturing, all key elements of engineering.
We thank the National Science Foundation and the SUCCEED coalition for financial support. Diane Beaudoin is also grateful to North Carolina State University's "Preparing the Professoriate" program for the opportunity for substantial involvement in the development and teaching of a new engineering course.
